Description

In the three years that Jesus ministered on earth many people came into contact with him and their lives were changed forever. This book tells the stories of some of these people. There is Jael, a young Midianite woman traveling with her grandfather, Abiasaph, an old Midianite priest of Yahweh. Her parents and brother where brutally slain by Roman soldiers in Rome. Jael, once devoted to God, now finds herself resentful and bitterly disappointed in Him for not preventing the murder of her family. When she and her grandfather encounter Jesus at the Sea of Galilee the Messiah's love brings healing and a new mission into the young woman's life. Then there is Nicolas, a young Roman soldier who meets Jael and her grandfather. The old priest Abiasaph talks to Nicolas about God and what it means to be loved by Him. The young soldier is interested, but is more fascinated by Jael, who treats him with disdain. Nicolas determines to see her again and does so in the town of Tiberias. Again he and Abiasaph discuss religion and despite himself Nicolas starts to experience a longing for something he cannot name. This feeling of something missing becomes so strong that Nicolas starts to fight against it, resenting this emotional upheaval. Finally he comes face to face with Jesus in Jerusalem and the young soldier realises that he does not belong to himself any longer. Thirdly there is a rebel named Demos. His path crosses on various occasions with Jael, Nicolas and Jesus. Demos, who started life with the most respectable of outlooks for his future was cruelly treated by fate until all that remained was hatred, the desire for revenge and a life spent running from the authorities. His first meeting with Jesus leaves him shaken and fighting to maintain his vision of getting even with those who stole his life. His second meeting sees him defeated and broken at Jesus's side at the place of crucifixion. The forth character is a lady of Roman descent, Euodia, living a life of luxury with her husband, Vesperus, head of Pontius Pilate's personal guard. But Euodia's wonderful life she had envisioned when she had married in Rome ends very soon as they come to live in Israel when Pilate is dispatched there as Procurator. Sickened daily by her husband's cruelty towards her and also toward the Jewish people of Israel, Euodia is desperate to find peace and freedom from the guilt she feels for all the innocent blood Vesperus has shed. Hearing about Jesus, the man who forgives sin and heals the sick, Euodia seeks him out. Their meeting is so startling that it initially scares Euodia into fleeing back home, but the voice inside her grows until she cannot ignore it and finally she begs God to reveal Himself. Lastly there is Joses, the younger brother of Jesus. Having grown up with Jesus he is finding it hard to assimilate the brother he thought he knew with the Messiah the people now claim Jesus to be. Joses crosses paths with Jael, Nicolas and Euodia and each time Jesus is spoken of as if he was some kind of saviour, a holy man, the Son of God. When Jesus journeys to Jerusalem for the last time Joses goes with him, having become intrigued by Jesus. Joses learns more about his brother than he ever expected and in the end comes to the very startling discovery about who Jesus truly is and what his mission on earth entails. Together with all these characters are intertwined the lives of Mary, the mother of Jesus, his brothers and sisters, the men Jesus calls to be his disciples, the women along with Mary Magdalene who follow him, Pontius Pilate and his wife, Herod Antipas and John the Baptist. Jesus touched their lives while he was on earth, and still manages to shake each of us into falling to our knees in breathless wonder at his ultimate sacrifice and a love that surpasses all understanding.
